The study of Theology proper, otherwise known as the doctrine of God, is a focal point of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. According to this faith, God is not only the originator and sustainer of everything in existence but also a divine force that transcends and illuminates all of creation.

The Eastern Orthodox Church’s teachings on theosis or divinization are unique and thought-provoking. They believe that humans are meant to become partakers of the divine nature through their relationship with God, stemming from the belief that we were originally created in God’s image and likeness. Interestingly, this is made possible through Christ’s incarnation, death, and resurrection. In addition, the Church’s emphasis on apophatic or negative theology further highlights the limitations of human language and understanding of God. While we can say what God is not, we cannot fully comprehend or express what God is in favorable terms.

In Orthodox theology, God is believed to exist as a single entity with three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who have maintained a seamless and eternal bond. This tenet, called the Holy Trinity, is one of the primary doctrines of the Orthodox Church and serves as a pillar of its faith.

The Eastern Orthodox view of theology is all about connecting with the divine. They focus heavily on how God is both beyond us and yet present in our everyday lives. The idea of the Holy Trinity is central to their beliefs, as is the ultimate goal of achieving spiritual unity with God, or “theosis.” Orthodox Christians strive to strengthen their bond with God and follow his teachings in everything they do.
