The Eastern Orthodox Church places great importance on interpreting sacred texts through the lens of hermeneutics, or the art of understanding and applying scripture to the modern world. Rather than relying solely on a literal interpretation, the Church believes in examining the historical, cultural, and linguistic context in which the text was written. Additionally, the Church places a high value on interpreting texts in the context of its teachings and traditions, with guidance from the Holy Spirit. The Orthodox Church seeks to bridge the gap between ancient scripture and the contemporary world by employing hermeneutics.

One key aspect of Eastern Orthodox hermeneutics is the concept of theosis, or the transformation of the human person to become more like God. This concept shapes the Orthodox interpretation of texts, emphasizing the spiritual transformation of the reader as a goal of interpretation. The Orthodox Church also emphasizes the importance of interpreting texts with humility, recognizing the limitations of human understanding and the need for divine guidance.

In Orthodox Christian theology, hermeneutics is not limited to the interpretation of biblical texts but also includes the interpretation of liturgical texts, icons, and other elements of the Church’s worship and tradition. These texts and practices are understood as important sources of spiritual guidance and are interpreted in light of the Church’s teachings and the experience of the faithful throughout history.

Eastern Orthodox hermeneutics uncover a fascinating concept called theosis, where the human metamorphoses into a more divine form, emulating God. This idea shapes the Orthodox interpretation of texts and highlights the spiritual transformation of the reader as the ultimate goal of interpretation. Humility is also vital to interpreting texts in the Orthodox Church, knowing human comprehension has limitations and guidance from a higher power is necessary.

Orthodox Christian theology’s hermeneutics stand beyond the interpretation of solely biblical texts but also includes liturgical texts, icons, and other Church elements. These texts and practices are significant sources of divine guidance, leading to the desired spiritual enlightenment in Orthodox teaching.

The Eastern Orthodox approach to interpreting texts is holistic, focusing on the original context, divine guidance, and the transformative power of the written word. By delving deeply into the scriptures with careful attention, Orthodox Christians seek to understand God’s teachings and develop a stronger, more intimate connection with Him. This approach offers a powerful tool for spiritual growth and deeper insight into the mysteries of faith.
