In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Christology takes center stage as it delves into the fascinating aspects of Jesus Christ’s nature, personhood, and mission as the Son of God and the world’s Savior. What sets this perspective apart is its devotion to the “hypostatic union” – an intricately woven concept that brings together Jesus Christ’s divine and human natures into a seamless, mysterious, and awe-inspiring whole. This union brings into focus the idea that Jesus Christ is a single person yet embodies dual natures that complement each other flawlessly and are not disconnected.

The Orthodox Church believes Christ is a unique being who existed before all time as an uncreated divine entity. Despite his duality of nature, both fully human and fully divine, Christ is seen as a single person who redeemed humanity through his death and resurrection. For the Orthodox Church, Christ’s mission was not merely a matter of saving humanity from sin and death; it was also about re-establishing a connection between humanity and God. The Orthodox Church strongly emphasizes the importance of the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist, as a means of participating in the life and saving work of Christ.

The Orthodox way of worship is a beautiful celebration of Christ’s life and teachings, demonstrated through the veneration of sacred icons, soul-stirring hymns, and fervent prayers. In their observance of the liturgical calendar, the Orthodox Church seeks to honor the fullness of Christ’s incarnate life, including his birth, baptism, miraculous transfiguration, sacrificial crucifixion, triumphant resurrection, and glorious ascension. The core of Orthodox Christology emphasizes the unity of Christ’s dual nature, both fully divine and fully human, and his great mission to rescue humanity from sin and bridge the gap between God and man. Through participation in sacraments and liturgical worship, Orthodox Christians strive to become active participants in this sacred and life-changing mission.
