In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, anthropology is the theological study of the nature and purpose of humanity as created by God. According to Orthodox theology, humans are created in the image and likeness of God, and their purpose is to participate in the divine life through communion with God and others.
Orthodox anthropology emphasizes the unity of the human person, who is understood as a composite of body and soul. The body is seen as an essential and integral aspect of the human person, created by God and capable of expressing and manifesting spiritual realities. The soul is the spiritual aspect of the person, created by God and infused with life and the capacity for communion with God.
From an Orthodox perspective, humanity’s fall into sin and separation from God has resulted in a brokenness and distortion of human nature. Sin is understood not as a moral failing but as a separation from God, resulting in alienation and brokenness. The Orthodox Church teaches that through repentance and the sacraments, such as confession and the Eucharist, humans can be restored to communion with God and the divine life for which they were created.
Orthodox anthropology also emphasizes the importance of community and relationships in human life. Humans are created for communion with God and others, and the Church is seen as a community of believers who participate in the divine life together. The Orthodox Church emphasizes the importance of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation in human relationships, reflecting the perfect love and communion of the Holy Trinity.
